✨ Opening Reflection: The Thought in the Cell
Dear Friends,
Whenever I’ve heard someone talk about repentance, I’ve always thought about it in terms of actions; asking God to forgive something I did.
Like in the Lord’s Prayer: “forgive us our trespasses.”
It always felt tied to something specific.
But a few weeks ago, I started thinking about something differently.
There were some negative, nagging thoughts I had been carrying for years. These thoughts would show up again and again and they made me feel very unhappy. And over time, I could see they were affecting me more than I realized. They were creating unnecessary anxiety in my life.
I never really thought of those thoughts as something to repent of.
They just felt like… thoughts.
But I started to wonder:
If repentance is about turning back to God, why wouldn’t that include what I’m allowing to stay in my mind?
So instead of trying to manage those thoughts or push them away, I did something different.
I brought them to God and simply asked for forgiveness.
“Lord, I repent of these thoughts. I’ve been holding onto them, and I don’t want them here anymore.”
I don’t know how else to explain it other than this…
there was an immediate release.
It felt like I had been sitting in something I didn’t even realize was holding me… and suddenly the door opened.
Like being released from a jail cell.
There was a lightness. A freedom. An unburdening.
And those thoughts that had been there for years? They haven’t come back.
There’s a line in Scripture:
“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
I used to read that as something I needed to control.
Now I’m starting to see it differently.
Not something I have to manage on my own.
Something I can bring to God honestly…and be freed from.
📖 Scripture Highlight
“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
~2 Corinthians 10:5
• What is the thought that keeps returning, the one that feels familiar but heavy?
• How has that thought been shaping the way you feel, respond, or see a situation?
• If that thought weren’t there, what might feel different in your life right now?
• What would it look like to stop managing that though, and instead bring it honestly to God?
🕊 Teaching: Repentance as Realignment
I’ve started to see repentance a little differently.
Not just as something we do after we’ve made a mistake…
but as a way of realigning what’s happening inside of us.
The word often translated as repentance is metanoia - “a change of mind”.
Not just behavior. Mind.
It matters more than we might think.
Because we can know what’s true and still allow thoughts to stay in our minds that don’t align with that truth.
Thoughts we rehearse.
Thoughts we justify.
Thoughts we get used to.
Over time, they start to feel normal.
But they still shape us.
Repentance, in this sense, isn’t God pointing a finger at us.
It’s God inviting us out of something that’s been weighing us down.
It’s the shift from:
“I need to figure this out.”
to
“God, I don’t want to carry this anymore.”
And that’s where the freedom comes in.
💡 Living it Out: A Simple Shift
This week, instead of trying to control your thoughts, try bringing them directly to God.
When you notice a thought that keeps returning, especially one that feels heavy, negative, or untrue…pause.
Don’t argue with it.
Don’t try to fix it.
Don’t push it away.
Bring it to God.
You might say:
“Lord, I repent of this thought. I’ve been holding onto it, and I don’t want it here anymore.”
Keep it simple. Keep it honest.
And then let it go.
If it comes back, repeat the process; not with frustration, but with trust.
The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s realignment.
Freedom often begins with one honest prayer.
🙏 Prayer for the Week
Lord,
Thank You that Your mercy reaches into even the quietest corners of our minds.
Today, we hand over the thoughts we’ve held onto, the ones that have shaped us in ways we didn’t intend.
Bring Your truth, Your peace, and Your freedom in their place.
Amen.
🌟 Closing Encouragement
Sometimes the work of Lent is quiet.
It doesn’t always look like big changes.
Sometimes it begins with a single thought — noticed, surrendered, and released.
And in that small shift, something opens.
Because the work of Jesus doesn’t just happen around us.
It begins within us. In the peace of our own hearts.
With Hope & Clarity,
Tara
