Dear Friends,

Recently I heard a pastor share something that stayed with me.

He was talking about how easy it is to look at someone’s life and assume we know how well they’re following God. From the outside, it can seem obvious who is living faithfully and who is not.

But God sees something deeper.

He sees the choices people make within the circumstances they’ve been given.

Someone who struggles with alcohol choosing not to drink is making a faithful decision that may go unseen by others. That daily choice may be incredibly difficult, and yet it is deeply honoring to God.

At the same time, someone whose life is comfortable, someone with resources, stability, and opportunity, may be called to a different kind of faithfulness. If much has been given and little is shared, that too says something about the heart.

Jesus reminds us of this throughout the Gospels. Faithfulness is not measured by comparison. It’s measured by how we respond to what we have been given.

And that brings me back to the story of Mary of Bethany.

When Mary poured expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet, the people around her immediately began to criticize her. They calculated the cost and debated whether it was appropriate.

But Jesus stopped them and said something simple:

Mary wasn’t responding to what others thought she should do. She was responding to the moment in front of her, offering what she had.

Jesus didn’t ask for more than that.

Faithfulness is not about doing everything.

It’s about responding to God with the life we have been given.

Sometimes that looks like resisting a temptation no one else sees.

Sometimes it looks like generosity when life has given us much.

And sometimes it looks like Mary, recognizing a moment and offering what we can.

“She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.”
— Mark 14:8

One of the most freeing truths in the Christian life is that God does not ask the same things of every person.

He asks us to be faithful with what we have been given.

Jesus makes this clear throughout the Gospels. In the story of the widow’s offering, the smallest gift was seen as the greatest because of what it represented. In another teaching He reminds us:

God sees the full picture…our struggles, our opportunities, our resources, our challenges.

Faithfulness is not about comparing our lives to someone else’s.

It’s about responding honestly and intentionally to the invitations God places in front of us.

Consider reflecting on this question during the week:

Where is God inviting me to respond faithfully right now?

You might try one simple practice:

• Notice one opportunity to show kindness or generosity
• Offer encouragement to someone who may need it
• Pause and ask God where your attention is needed today
• Reflect on one area where you may be called to grow
• Thank God for the opportunities you’ve been given

Faithfulness often begins with awareness.

Lord,

Help me see the opportunities You place before me.
Give me wisdom to respond with faithfulness,
not comparing my path to others,
but offering what I have with honesty and trust.
Teach me to recognize the moments that matter
and to meet them with courage and love.

Amen.

Mary didn’t know the full story yet, but she recognized that the moment mattered.

This week, may you notice the invitations placed before you — and respond in the same spirit: doing what you can with what you’ve been given.
