✨ Opening Reflection
Dear Friends,
This past Sunday, my teen wasn’t feeling up for church. Rather than pushing her to go with the rest of us, we ended up having a meaningful conversation about happiness and joy and it has stayed with me.
Happiness often depends on circumstances. It comes and goes with our mood, our energy, and how life is unfolding in the moment. It can arrive quickly and just as quickly slip away when something shifts.
Joy shows up differently than happiness.
It doesn’t depend on whether the day goes well or whether we feel energized or motivated. Joy often arrives quietly, through purpose, through connection, through knowing that even in a hard moment, God is still present.
What I’ve been reminded of lately is that joy often comes from purpose. When we say “yes” to God and show up for others, serving, encouraging, and giving of ourselves. When happiness feels out of reach, we can still experience tremendous joy.
There’s something grounding about knowing we matter to someone else. Purpose lifts our eyes beyond our own feelings and reminds us that God is still working through us. In those moments, joy isn’t about how we feel, it’s about who we’re becoming and the love we’re being invited to give.
📖 Scripture Highlight
“The joy of the Lord is your strength.”
— Nehemiah 8:10
Joy doesn’t remove the weight we carry, it gives us the strength to carry it.
🕊 Mini-Teaching: Happiness vs. Joy
1. Happiness is circumstantial; joy is relational
Happiness is often tied to what’s happening around us—our mood, our energy, or whether life feels easy in the moment. It can be a beautiful gift, but it isn’t steady.
Joy, on the other hand, is rooted in relationship. It grows out of our connection with God and with others. Even when circumstances are difficult, joy remains accessible because it’s anchored in presence, not outcomes.
2. Happiness reacts; joy strengthens
Happiness tends to rise and fall in response to external events. When something shifts, happiness can fade quickly.
Joy doesn’t react in the same way. Scripture tells us that joy is our strength, not because it removes hardship, but because it helps us endure it with faith, purpose, and hope. Joy steadies us when emotions feel unpredictable.
3. Happiness centers on feeling; joy flows from purpose
Happiness often asks, How do I feel right now?
Joy asks, How is God working through me?
When we say yes to God and show up for others, serving, encouraging, giving of ourselves, joy has a way of rising, even when happiness feels out of reach. Purpose shifts our focus outward and reminds us that God is still at work through us.
💡 Living it Out This Week
As you move through this week, consider one small way to live from joy instead of chasing happiness:
Serve someone quietly
Encourage someone who feels unseen
Give your time, attention, or presence
Say yes to something God is nudging you toward
Notice how joy meets you there.
🙏 Prayer This Week
Lord,
Help me seek joy that goes deeper than happiness.
When my emotions fluctuate, anchor me in You.
Give me the courage to say yes to You
and the compassion to show up for others.
Let joy strengthen me, not because life is easy,
but because You are present and at work.
Amen.
🌟 Closing Encouragement
Happiness can be a moment.
Joy is a posture.
May this week remind you that joy is often found not in receiving,
but in giving…
not in escaping hard moments,
but in meeting God within them.
With love and joy,
Tara
