There are seasons in life that leave a mark.

Seasons where something important slips away:  a relationship that grows distant, a peace that gets crowded out, a confidence that erodes under the weight of too much for too long.

And we wonder when it will end.

There's no grand gesture. No bell tolling. But one day you simply realize you're on the other side of it. The fog has lifted. The peace has returned. You feel like yourself again.

That's one of the moments Psalm 126 is describing.

"When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream."

The people could barely believe it. The restoration felt almost surreal — because the loss had been so real, so total, so long. And now here they were on the other side of it saying: the Lord has done great things for us and we are filled with joy.

Not a manufactured joy. Not a pretended joy. The deep, quiet, almost disbelieving joy of someone who has been restored and knows it.

Here's what I want to ask you today: where has God restored something in your life? Or, where is God restoring something right now?

Maybe it's a relationship that found its way back. A season of peace re-emerging after a long stretch of chaos. A faith that felt dry and distant and then quietly, gradually became alive again. A sense of yourself that grief or loss or transition had taken, and that God has slowly, faithfully been returning to you.

Are you still marveling at it? Or have you already moved on to the next thing you're waiting for? Did you notice it at all before now?

The psalmist didn't rush past the restoration. They stopped. They named it. The Lord has done great things for us. They let themselves be filled with joy. Gratitude welled up.

That's the invitation for this week.

Restoration in Scripture is never just historical. It's personal. It's the God who restored Zion who also restores communities, marriages, confidence, peace, faith, and joy. The same hand. The same faithfulness. The same capacity to do what feels impossible.

And the response to restoration, every time, is joy. Not because everything is perfect. But because God has been faithful. And that faithfulness is worth stopping for.

This week's invitation: name your restoration.

Take a few quiet minutes - with your journal, on a walk, over your morning coffee - and finish this sentence:

The Lord has done great things for me. He restored ___________.

Write it down. Say it out loud if you can. Let yourself feel the weight of what that sentence means.

And if you're not yet on the other side of a hard season, if you're still in the fog, still waiting, still not sure restoration is coming, this psalm is for you too. It ends with a promise: those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.

The waiting is not the end of the story. It never has been.

Lord,

Open my eyes to what You have already restored in my life.
Where I have forgotten to marvel, remind me.
Where I have moved on too quickly, slow me down.
Fill me with the kind of joy that comes from truly seeing Your faithfulness.
And where I am still waiting, help me trust that You are not finished yet.

Amen.

The Lord has done great things.

Maybe it's time to stop and name them.

This week let yourself be filled with the joy of what God has already done, not just what you're still hoping for. Restoration has a way of going unnoticed when we're always looking ahead.

Look back for a moment. See how far you've come. And let that be enough for today.
